President Donald Trump asked the owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team Tuesday if he would be willing to help renegotiate NAFTA during a White House visit.

"He's a friend of mine for a long time, he's a great, great negotiator," Trump said of Ron Burkle. The team was at the White House to celebrate its Stanley Cup championship of last season.

"How about negotiating some of our horrible trade deals that they've made?" Trump asked.

"I really mean that — if you want to get involved in negotiating NAFTA, I like it."

Trump then confirmed Burkle is not a fan of the current NAFTA deal, a trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada that was signed in 1994 by then President Bill Clinton.

"You're not on the other side of NAFTA, Ron, are you?" Trump asked.

Burkle replied, "I am not."

Trump has vowed to either rework NAFTA to make it more appealing to U.S. workers and companies or withdraw the U.S. from it altogether. In August, the president accused Canada and Mexico of being "very difficult" at the NAFTA negotiating table.
