President Donald Trump's approval rating has improved slightly, with most voters supporting his recent deal with Democrats but little else, in the latest poll from NBC News/The Wall Street Journal.

Trump's overall job approval improved by three points since August, though more disapprove of his performance than approve at 52 percent to 43. The vast majority of respondents support his agreement with Democrats to fund the government for another 90 days and provide hurricane relief funds. However, the majority disapprove of his handling of healthcare, race relations, the environment, the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, and most of all his use of Twitter.

Another recent poll from Politico/Morning Consult showed identical approval ratings for Trump, showing strong divisions along party lines.

  • 43 percent approve of Trump's performance, 52 percent disapprove.
  • 81 percent of Republicans approve, 17 percent disapprove.
  • 12 percent of Democrats approve, 84 percent disapprove.
  • 40 percent of independents approve, 52 percent disapprove.

Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted the poll with Democrat Fred Yang, said that although Trump's approval rating has steadily fallen since he took office, "job approval can go both down and up."

Yang said that "going to the middle has helped him with the middle — without costing him much from his own base."

NBC/WSJ also found two Republican leaders, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, at their lowest rate in the poll's history; their Democratic counterparts, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, enjoy marginally better ratings.

  • McConnell: 11 percent positive, 41 percent negative
  • Ryan: 24 percent positive, 40 percent negative.
  • Schumer: 18 percent positive, 27 percent negative.
  • Pelosi: 25 percent positive, 43 percent negative.

"The antipathy of Trump voters to the D.C. establishment is not limited to Democrats," Yang added.

The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted from Sept. 14 until Sept. 18, surveying 900 adults by phone, with a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
