The latest Harvard-Harris poll shows a dip in Donald Trump's approval rating, with just 42 percent saying they approve of the job the president is doing compared to 58 percent who say they disapprove, according to The Hill.

Trump's approval rating in September stood at 45 percent, but the president since then has publicly criticized NFL players who kneel during the national anthem and made an insensitive remark to the widow of a Green Beret who was killed during the ambush in Niger.

The president has also been slammed for the government's response to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, with 51 percent of voters polled saying Trump's response was worse than his response to the hurricanes that hit the Gulf States.

"Trump has a strong economy and majority support for the job he is doing on the economy — normally enough to shoot any president's ratings sky high," said Harvard-Harris co-director Mark Penn. "But the intra-party war and dust kicked-up on Puerto Rico and his way of responding has people on edge about his leadership. He continues to maintain his tweets work for him despite the evidence they divide critical swing voters from his appeal."

The poll also found:

  • 60 percent say the country is on the wrong track.
  • 60 percent say failure to pass major legislation is the Republicans' fault.
  • 42 percent say Trump should be impeached.
  • 50 percent support the president on terrorism.
  • Only 38 percent say he has the ability to administer the government.

The survey, a collaboration between the Harris Poll and the Harvard Center for American Political Studies, polled 2,159 registered voters and was conducted between Oct. 14 and Oct. 18.
