Three conservative groups are behind a multimillion dollar advertising blitz to torpedo President Joe Biden’s picks for a Department of Justice position and for secretary of Health and Human Services, Politico reported.
The ad buy targeting Vanita Gupta, tapped for associate attorney general, and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, Biden’s nominee for secretary of HHS, started airing Thursday on cable news networks in Washington, D.C., and digital platforms, Politico reported.
A third ad buy will depict the role of “dark money” in electing Biden and shaping his Cabinet and policies, Politico reported.
The campaign is being led by Judicial Crisis Network, Heritage Action for America, and Americans for Public Trust.
“Liberals spent a record amount of dark money to elect Biden,” one ad declares. “Now they are cashing in,” it continues, attacking Biden chief of staff Ron Klain’s previous role on the board of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a Democrat think tank.
Two others attack Becerra and Gupta’s progressive policies. One $800,000 ad paid for by the Judicial Crisis Network titled “Dangerous Appointee” shows images of violence in cities and states where killings are on the rise.
Another ad from Heritage Action for America says Becerra “supports government run healthcare,” “sued Catholic nuns” as California attorney general, and would “decriminalize illegal immigration.” The ad says Becerra “is not a doctor” — former HHS Secretary Alex Azar was not a physician, either — and is the “wrong appointee” in the middle of a pandemic.
A “dark money” organization is a political nonprofit that isn't required to disclose their donors. Judicial Crisis Network and Heritage Action for America don’t have to reveal their funders either, according to Politico.
