The Democratic National Committee hired Mary Beth Cahill as its interim CEO amid a report that it is "dead broke."

Cahill replaces Jess O'Connell, who abruptly resigned from the DNC earlier this week.

Cahill is a veteran Democratic operative — having managed John Kerry's 2004 campaign — and former executive director of Emily's List, Politico reports.

But she inherits, temporarily, an organization that is woefully in debt and borrowing to make payroll and pay rent, The Intercept reported.

Further, the DNC has a little more than $422,000 cash on hand — in lieu of $6.1M debt — compared to the almost $40 million in cash on hand and no debt boasted by the Republican National Committee.

O'Connell's resignation sent shockwaves through the DNC, coming just 8 months after she was hired.

The DNC is saying she resigned for personal reasons, Politico reported.
