DNC Raises $850,000 Off Government Shutdown

By    |   Tuesday, 01 October 2013 04:32 PM EDT

The Democratic National Committee had its best fundraising day since the 2012 election Monday, garnering almost $850,000 from 30,000 donors, a DNC official told The Hill.

The DNC apparently was able to take advantage of the approach of both the government shutdown and the commencement of the Affordable Care Act's insurance exchanges. Both began Tuesday.

"With Republicans shutting down the government and Obamacare going live, Democratic grassroots supporters are engaged, energized and ready to fight for the causes they're committed to," the official said.

The overall picture isn't so positive for the DNC, however. It owes a whopping $18.1 million to its creditors, Fortune magazine reports.

That deficit compares to a $12.5 million cash holding for the Republican National Committee, according to Fortune.

DNC officials place part of the blame for the group's funding woes on the White House, sources tell Fortune.
