A Democratic Party spokeswoman speculated Thursday that Rep. Jason Chaffetz's decision to not seek re-election could be due to Russia having compromising information about him.
Adrienne Watson, the Democratic National Committee deputy communications director, retweeted former British Parliament member Louise Mensch, now a political pundit, claiming her sources confirm Russia has "kompromat," or compromising material, on Chaffetz.
Mensch later speculated that Chaffetz is connected to "Russian money laundering," in response to a theory from former White House staffer, now travel photographer, Claude Taylor.
Fact-check website Snopes writes on the speculation about the congressman:
"We found no proof that the Russians have compromising information on Chaffetz, as the claim is entirely based on hearsay without any supporting evidence offered. Congress is currently on recess and we have not yet heard back from Chaffetz's spokesperson."
Chaffetz told KSL News Radio in Utah that he "might depart early." On Thursday, he told Fox 13 in Salt Lake City, "When I contemplate another 200 nights away from home, it is just too much."
