President Donald Trump has made great turnaround over the last week in part because of how he has changed his messaging about the coronavirus pandemic, former presidential adviser and campaign consultant Dick Morris to Newsmax TV.
"There has been an enormous, enormous growth in Trump's image and approval rating in the last week," Morris told Monday's "Spicer & Co." "Rasmussen had Trump two behind and then six behind. We don't know until Wednesday where he'll have it now. But he has Trump's job approval rating at 51 [%], which is the highest it's ever been. And, by contrast, by the way, Obama's approval rating at this time in 2012 when he was running for re-election was 44."
The latest Rasmussen numbers are taken from likely voters, which includes 40% who strongly approve of Trump's job approval.
"So, Trump has gone up six points in approval this week in the Rasmussen poll," Morris said. "What I think is happening is that he's manifesting a real concern for the virus. It's no longer just talking it away and saying, it'll be gone in six weeks and hot weather will take care of it.
"Instead, he's really focusing and really talking about dealing with it and showing he's dealing with it," Morris continued.
"But bear in mind, he doesn't win over COVID. He wins because it goes away, and underneath the smokescreen, you see how terribly left-wing socialist and dependent on the crazies Joe Biden is."
Last week, Morris said Trump needed the current daily coronavirus infection rate to fall to win the presidential election in November. Today, Morris' confidence in Trump's ability to win has strengthened due to the reduction in coronavirus numbers.
"The first thing he can do, the most important thing, is to understand that the COVID virus will go away, that his efforts are in fact succeeding," Morris said. "There's been a leveling off of the new cases . . . The average number of cases 7 to 14 days ago was 65,000 new ones a day. In the last 7 days, it's been 60,000 a day."
