Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., urged her colleagues on the left to continue fighting for changes to America's gun laws in the Weekly Democratic address released Friday.

Feinstein attended a Wednesday White House meeting with President Donald Trump and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, during which she asked for a ban on assault rifles. She repeated that call in the weekly address.

Feinstein called assault rifles "weapons of war" and admitted banning them won't stop every shooting, but such a move would yield fewer gun deaths.

"If we can decrease the death count, we're saving lives. And that means it's really worth doing," she said.

Feinstein rattled off several gun control proposals during the address that lasted just over five minutes, including banning bump stocks, raising the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, and putting in place stronger regulations designed to prevent people with mental illness from obtaining firearms.

"On Wednesday, President Trump signaled support for many of these proposals. I hope that can be a lesson for the Congress that Republicans need to finally allow Congress to pass these common sense measures," she said.

"There's so much we can do. We just need the willpower and intestinal fortitude to take on the NRA and get something done for the safety of the men, women, and particularly the children in our schools of this country."

The gun debate in America has taken on new life in the two-plus weeks since a gunman walked into a Florida high school and shot and killed 14 children and three adults. Feinstein referenced that shooting and the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which left 27 people dead.

"Between just these two shootings, Congress did precisely nothing to remove weapons of war from our streets," Feinstein said. "Nothing to tighten background checks. Nothing to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals."
