Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., surprised an audience in San Francisco by expressing hope that President Donald Trump "can be a good president."

Feinstein's comments came while being interviewed onstage at the Herbst Theater by Ellen Tauscher, a former East Bay congresswoman. By the end of the  "conversation," as it was billed, Feinstein "shocked" the 850 in attendance by telling them to prepare for Trump to see out the rest of his term, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

"The question is whether he can learn and change,: she added. "If so, I believe he can be a good president."

"The crowd reacted with stunned silence, broken only with scattered 'No’s' and a few hisses and some nervous laughter,” the Chronicle’s John Wildermuth reports.

"We’ll have to see if he can forget himself enough and have the type of empathy and direction the country needs,” she said after reminding the audience of Trump's brief time in office so far, and added that if he doesn’t, "there are things that can be done."

Feinstein repeatedly has blasted Trump over his immigration policies, his ban of transgender people from the military, and most recently came out against his pardon of former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
