Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are demanding Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., publicly release a letter that supposedly details accusations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, The Hill reported.

Kavanaugh's accuser went public with allegations on Sunday, but Feinstein received a letter with the claims in July.

"Senator Feinstein should publicly release the letter she received back in July so that everyone can know what she’s known for weeks," a Republican committee spokesman said, adding that "It raises a lot of questions about Democrats’ tactics and motives to bring this to the rest of the committee’s attention only now rather than during these many steps along the way."

Palo Alto University psychology Prof. Christine Blasey Ford on Sunday publicly identified herself in The Washington Post as the woman accusing Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

Ford said that Kavanaugh forced himself on her by pinning her to a bed in the early 1980s, when the two were attending nearby high schools in Maryland.

Ford said she sent the letter to Feinstein through her congresswoman.

A spokesperson for Feinstein said: "The senator took these allegations seriously and believed they should be public, [but] the woman in question made it clear she did not want this information to be public.”

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer called for the vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation to be delayed due to Ford's accusation.

In a statement provided by the White House, Kavanaugh said, "I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation.”
