Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly praised his agency's response Thursday to the recent computer virus attack that infected computers across the globe.
"What was really impressive to me in all of the high-level meetings I was at — at the White House — on this topic … how almost every part of every conversation ended with, 'DHS is in the lead, DHS has got this,'" Kelly told the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, reports The Hill.
Kelly was referencing the WannaCry ransomware virus that targeted computer networks using the Windows operating system earlier this month. Somewhere around 150 countries were hit by the virus.
Kelly said DHS worked with the private sector to help squash the spread of the virus.
"That was a direct result — not just DHS but to a large degree DHS — in how that was detected initially, how we worked with our partners outside the U.S. government as well as inside. Pretty impressive," Kelly said.
Cyber security researchers said there are signs that North Korea may have been behind the WannaCry attack.
