Rep. Devin Nunes', R-Calif., midterm war chest reportedly grew $2.25 million fatter in six weeks, with donations pouring in from grassroots supporters pleased with his aggressive defense of President Donald Trump amid the Russia probe.
The Washington Examiner reported Nunes' first national fundraising haul should push his total past $5 million. The latest figures will be filed with the Federal Election Commission ahead of California's June 5 primary, the Examiner reported.
"If you've got the attention of the grassroots — particularly if you're investigating the president or defending him — it's a smart investment to make," a unnamed GOP consultant told the Examiner.
The House Intelligence chairman raised $1.25 million in the first quarter, more than he collected in all of 2017. An additional $2.3 million poured in since April 1, with six weeks to go in the second quarter, the Examiner reported.
According to the Examiner, Nunes —which described him as a conservative media star — appealed to grassroots Republicans who contribute to campaigns in small amounts, using direct mail and digital outreach.
