Florida officials are looking at ways to stem the opioid epidemic, and ways must be found to stop drugs from coming into the United States, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday, while agreeing with President Donald Trump's Oval Office speech.

"Most of those opioids, the fentanyl, the street opioids, (are coming) over the southern border," the governor, who was sworn in on Tuesday, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

"China sends it; the cartels bring it across."

DeSantis said he wants to stop illegal immigration, but he believes fighting the drug epidemic would "really make a huge difference."

"There are certain things I can do as governor, but man, we need to really stop the product from coming into our country," said the governor.

DeSantis added that he thought Trump's address differed from his more fiery stump speeches or Twitter statements, but he thought it was also effective, and he thinks the president should "probably do more of that moving forward."

He also said he agrees that "just in a normal sense," he does believe that there is an emergency at the border, when asked if he thinks Trump would be correct in declaring a national emergency situation.

"I wasn't even aware of some of these provisions of law from the DOD (Department of Defense), so I just have to look at it," said DeSantis. "I mean, clearly, this has not only been a persistent problem but something that seems to have gotten worse over the years."
