The deputy mayor of a New Jersey suburb — who sparked a furor with a Facebook post comparing undocumented immigrants to an infestation of "rabid, messy, mean raccoons" — has resigned.

"It was insensitive at best and it was cruel at the worst. I am most heartily sorry," Rick Blood — second in command of Mendham Township, a bedroom community 30 miles west of New York City — told a town meeting Monday night, NJ.com reports.

On Sunday, Blood posted a message on Facebook that read in part:

"Like many citizens, I've wondered and tried hard to understand why [President Donald] Trump has such a remarkable following (It's obvious why he probably should not!) Then a friend sent me this raccoon story. It makes no difference about your political leanings, this is just a good explanation WHY (or it's as good as any I can come up with).

"If you really want to know how the majority of the people feel? And this applies to both democrats and republicans [sic], read below, it says it all.

"You've been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons. Hundreds of messy, rabid, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement. You want them gone immediately. You call the city, 4 different exterminators, but nobody can handle the job. But there is this one guy and he guarantees you to get rid of them, so you hire him. You don't care if the guy smells, you don't care if the guys swears … you want your problem fixed! He's the guy, he's the best. Period! …

"This country is weak, bankrupt, and our enemies are making fun of us. We are being invaded by illegals, we are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo and Hasid is a special group with special rights to the point where we don't recognize the country we were born and raised in. 'AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED' and Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want."

Blood does not identify his friend in the post.

At the town meeting Monday, dozens of residents denounced Blood's message, with some holding signs reading "Stop the Racism" and "America's Got Room, Immigrants Welcome," The Daily Record reported.

Resident Laurie Pettine said: "These vile comments posted by Mr. Blood are an embarrassment for our community. There is no room for trust in this climate. Mr. Blood, please resign."

When Blood's resignation was announced, the crowd reportedly erupted in applause.
