A pair of Democrats is at the fore of a movement to try and deny President-elect Donald Trump the presidency, the International Business Times reported.

Michael Baca of Colorado and Bret Chiafalo of Washington hope to persuade 37 of their GOP colleagues to reject Trump when the Electoral College meets Dec. 19, IB Times reported.

Baca and Chiafalo call themselves the "Hamilton Electors," a nod to Alexander Hamilton, who would no doubt say that Trump fits the profile of a president that the Electoral College is meant to guard against, the pair say.

"We're trying to be that 'break in case of emergency' fire hose that's gotten dusty over the last 200 years," Chaifolo told The Atlantic. "This is an emergency."

Failing that, the pair hopes to at least start a conversation on Electoral College reform.

Trump owns the electoral lead, 290 to 232, while Hillary Clinton has a 1 million-plus advantage in the popular vote.

"The biggest criticism we've gotten so far is along the lines of, 'The people have spoken, why don't you go with the people?'" Baca told The Atlantic. "But if we did that, then Clinton would be the president."

The Baca-Chiafalo group is hoping for a "compromise candidate," like Mitt Romney or John Kasich, IB Times reported.
