President Donald Trump Sunday night said former Vice President Joe Biden "lied" by claiming during his debate with Sen. Bernie Sanders that the president wants to cut Social Security and Medicare.

Instead, Trump said in a tweet, cuts would come instead if Biden is elected president.

"I must say, that was a VERY boring debate," Trump tweeted Sunday night. "Biden lied when he said I want to cut Social Security and Medicare. That's what they ALL said 4 years ago, and nothing happened, in fact, I saved Social Security and Medicare. I will not be cutting, but they will. Be careful!"

Earlier this month, Trump came under fire after appearing to say during a Fox News town hall that he would back cuts to Social Security and other entitlement programs. However, the White House insisted that he had not said he'd back such cuts, but that he wanted to cut deficits overall.

Sunday night, Biden and Sanders sparred extensively during the debate over whether Biden, while a senator from Delaware, had called for cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and veterans' programs, reports Fox News.

The Sanders campaign has been running a commercial with an audio clip of Biden, about 25 years ago, saying that when he called for a freeze on federal spending, that included Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and "every solitary thing in the government."

Both Politifact and The Washington Post say the claims are misleading, however, as Biden eventually backed increases.
