Democrats are hoping a wave of "outsider" candidates will help them win back the House in 2018, USA Today reports.

The party's recruitment effort is reminiscent of Republicans who were elected to Congress in 2010 with the tea party wave.

Those candidates recruited by the Democrats include public prosecutors, physicians, veterans and CIA operative, USA Today reported. Most are concentrated in Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota.

The party is pushing for candidates who can't be labeled "career politicians" or "party insiders."

"There have been a number of Democratic candidates throwing their hats in after declining to do so during the Obama years," said Kyle Kondik, managing editor of Sabato's Crystal Ball, a nonpartisan newsletter at the University of Virginia. "What Democrats are looking for are people who are not easily identified with the national Democratic brand."

Those candidates include people like Michigan Sixth District's Matt Longjohn, who recently stepped down as the first national physician executive in the YMCA's 170-year history and is challenging Republican Fred Upton, USA Today noted. They also include Elissa Slotkin, a former CIA official, who lives on a cattle farm in Holly, Michigan and is challenging Mike Bishop.

In order to win back the House, Democrats likely will have to win in districts where Trump was victorious in 2016.

Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean told The Los Angeles Times most of the candidates emerging from the grassroots have very little use for heavy party involvement.

"This generation can organize themselves better than we can organize them, and frankly they don't like institutions very much," he said.
