Rust-belt Dems Offer Support for Trump on Tariffs

Some Rust-Belt state Democrats are expressing some support for President Donald Trump's plan to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, The Hill reported.

"I'm going to tell you something, it is a national security threat," Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., told the news outlet in video recorded remarks.

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, told the Hill he is "generally supportive" of the president's initial announcement "if it's targeted against those that are cheating."

Ryan said cheap steel from China is hurting U.S producers and will make America dependent on foreign steel, which would hurt the nation's defense.

"It's affecting our industrial base . . . our ability to supply our own militrary," he declared.

Others who offered support included Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., who nevertheless encouraged Trump to take "a more thoughtful approach."

"There may be a need for us to take some action against these bad actors," he said, adding: "I'm not sure we ought to constrain the administration from doing what they ought to."

Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., told the Hill, however, Trump likely did not anticipate the "strong blowback" from his own party.
