President Donald Trump does not have "much choice" but to fight hard and go on the attack against Democrats over the matter of impeachment, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday.
"He has got to say, 'oh, that this is all crazy,'" Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "He has either got to say 'oh, is this all really fair,' or he has to say 'they are consistently cheating.' I think it's clear from his perspective, and I would argue historically it will be clear that this is all crazy."
It remains a fact, though, there are serious questions about corruption in Ukraine, and it is legitimate to ask questions about that, Gingrich said.
"I think the Democrats are terrified that if the president is actually able to pursue this, that, in fact, it will change the whole nature of our understanding of what happened over the last few years," Gingrich said.
The former speaker also discussed his opinion piece written for Fox News, where he says Trump is not going through an impeachment process, but rather a resistance that began the morning after he was officially elected.
"It's astonishing," Gingrich said. "He was declared the winner at 2:30 in the morning and the next day you have eight or nine cities where left-wingers have organized anti-Trump rallies. By Dec. 15, you have a Vanity Fair article about how the impeachment process is underway. And on the very day that the president is sworn in, Jan. 20, 2017, The Washington Post has a story about the Democrats planning for impeachment."
This means House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is carrying out an unconstitutional effort to use Congress to change the election outcome, Gingrich said.
