Democrats in New York are discussing the possibility that actor Richard Gere may run for Congress.

According to Page Six, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., is running for state attorney general. If he wins the election, Gere could jump into the fray and run for his vacant House seat to represent the 18th district.

Gere lives in Pound Ridge, New York, which is part of Westchester County and the 18th district.

"Richard Gere's name is being whispered about among Democrats. We'll see what he's made of," Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano told Page Six.

"The bottom line is, I want to elect a Democrat to kill the Trump agenda."

It's worth noting that Gere told CNN last year he was not interested in being a politician.

"I have no interest, none, zero, there's not even a speck of me that goes, 'Boy, 'I'd really want to be a politician,'" he said.

Gere is politically active as a private citizen, however, which he told CNN is an easier way to promote change.

"It's really easy speaking," he said. "I don't have to compromise with anything. The realm of politics is everyday, every moment, compromising somehow. I don't have the patience for it."

Gere spoke out about President Donald Trump in February 2017, accusing him of having a mental disorder.

"Yes, [my character] does have a mental illness, but compared with the president of the United States it looks like a mild headache," Gere said while discussing his film "The Dinner."
