If Democrats regain control of the House in November, it could spark to two-year battle between Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Politico is reporting.
But the battle – also contingent on Pelosi being elected speaker – could have some benefits for President Donald Trump, according to the website.
Lawmakers from both parties predict more gridlock, government shutdowns and the possibility of impeachment proceedings against Trump if Democrats reclaim the House.
However, both McConnell and Pelosi are up for re-election in 2020 and there is the potential for legislative breakthroughs, Politico noted.
It said both lawmakers may push for a deal on infrastructure spending – an agreement that would impact every state and congressional district.
The deal could benefit both parties. Trump would gain politically from any such bipartisan package.
"They (McConnell and Pelosi) don’t really have much of a relationship, and when they do interact, it's very transactional," said one source. "The circumstance that they would be in the room together … it’s some deadline driven event where all parties agree a solution is necessary and failure is not option."
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. added: "I can’t tell you whether they do or they don’t (get along), but I can tell you in the 20-plus years I’ve been here I’ve watched them both mellow. So, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t, or couldn’t sit down and negotiate something."
Meanwhile, The Hill reported that Democrats are position to regain control of the House if their momentum keeps up in the last period of legislative work.
