Departing Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is trying to stop West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin from bolting to the Trump administration.

Reid acknowledged he and other party leaders are trying to keep Manchin, a Democrat, "happy," The Hill reports.

"Joe Manchin obviously is running for a Cabinet spot," Reid told CNN on Monday. "I know that we've done stuff in the last few weeks to try to make Manchin happy."

The Hill notes that Democrats are hoping Manchin will run for reelection in West Virginia, where Trump won with nearly 70 percent of the vote.

There has been talk that he could possibly be appointed by Trump as secretary of energy or another high ranking post, according to the website.

Following the election, Manchin had sharply criticized Democrats and called Reid's reaction to Trump's win "an absolute embarrassment to the Senate as an institution, our Democratic Party and the nation," Politico reports.

Reid had called Trump a "sexual predator who lost the popular vote," according to the website.
