The Democratic Party is looking to make immigration reform its top priority in 2020, should they take back the White House and the Senate in the upcoming elections this November, The Hill reports.
Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., said that the issue “should be” the first priority of every Democrat in the Senate if the party wins the majority, a sentiment that was echoed by Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who said at the beginning of July that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and former Vice President Joe Biden have “all said it’s first up.”
“It’s definitely on the agenda,” Menendez told the Hill. “Billions more for the economy, Social Security, the wages of all Americans rose. On an economic basis alone, it was a compelling issue.”
The senator noted that the Senate’s 2013 immigration bill passed with 68 votes, and that “Not too many issues here of such controversy gets [68] votes. A lot in there should be revisited.”
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told the Hill that he would work with Democrats on another immigration bill, just as he did in 2013 as a member of the Gang of Eight.
“I want to solve a broken immigration system. I’m proud of the efforts of the past. I’m not giving up on this. God knows we need a better immigration system, and the 11 million, we’ll treat them fairly,” he said.
