SurveyUSA Poll: Dems Lead Both Georgia Senate Runoffs

Georgia has historically been a red state, but a Joe Biden victory and a potential Jan. 5 Senate runoffs sweep will hand full control of government to Democrats.

And, according to a SurveyUSA/11Alive poll Thursday, the Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are both leading tight races over incumbent Sens. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., and David Perdue, R-Ga.

Rev. Warnock holds a 7-point lead over Sen. Loeffler 52% to 45%, while Ossoff's 2-point margin over Sen. Perdue was even tighter at 50%-48%.

Even WXIA-TV Atlanta/11Alive.com notes, however, the polling has been skewed to the Democrats, including Ossoff leading in the pre-Nov. 3 election polls, but still falling almost 2% short of Perdue's support.

"Just 16% of Ga. Republican runoff voters believe their runoff vote will be counted accurately," according to SurveyUSA. "By contrast: 52% of Democrats believe their runoff vote will be counted accurately. How this affects turnout is unknowable."

But, the pollster noted, these results should not be "viewed as anything more than validation that every vote will be critical."

Other polling highlights

  • By race:
    • The GOP incumbents hold huge margins among white voters: Perdue 43-point and Loeffler 37 points.
    • Democrats hold even larger margins among Black voters: Ossoff 87 points, and Warnock 83 points.
  • By party base:
    • Perdue holds 96% of the GOP, Loeffler holds 92%.
    • Ossoff holds 94% of Democrats, Warnock holds 97%.
    • Independents split in both contests.
    • Moderates break 3:2 for Ossoff and 2:1 for Warnock.
  • By sex/age demographics:
    • Men give Perdue a 10-point edge; Loeffler a 9-point edge.
    • Women give Ossoff an 11-point advantage; women give Warnock a 19-point advantage.
    • Voters younger than age 50 break 5:4 Democrat in both contests.
    • But voters age 50+ like Perdue, while voters age 50+ are less convinced about Loeffler, where the contest is effectively tied.

SurveyUSA conducted online interviews of 850 voting-age adults Nov. 27-30, including 717 registered voters and 583 likely voters. No margin of error was provided.
