Some Democrats in the House of Representatives are planning to pick up the fight for gun control right where they left off before the Independence Day holiday,
Fox News reports.
A memo from the Congressional Black Caucus leadership said, "The plan is to be as disruptive to Speaker [Paul] Ryan as possible next week."
Ryan, his staff, and representatives of the House Sergeant at Arms Office and the Office of the Parliamentarian have had discussions about resisting another round of Democratic actions such as their sit-in to protest the lack of a gun control vote.
The memo calls for five-minute speeches on gun control, followed by one-minute speeches after that, reports Fox News. During unrelated evening votes, the caucus asked its members to hold up a photo of one of their constituents that has been a victim of gun violence.
According to the Fox News report, Republicans are aware that Democrats will use any "no" votes against them in political ads. For that reason, the House may block consideration of Democrats' amendments.
The House has agreed to hold a vote on one gun-related bill that would allow the attorney general to delay the sale of a gun to a terror suspect for three days. Democrats do not appear to be impressed with the bill, according to
The Guardian.
House Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has rebuked the bill.
"House Republicans are once again putting the NRA ahead of their responsibility to keep the American people safe," Pelosi said. She called Republicans in the House "a wholly-owned subsidiary of the NRA."
Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York told
The Daily Signal the Democrats' actions were partisan. "Democrats have tried to make it out to be an issue where just one political party is in favor of terrorists not being able to purchase guns or explosives, and that's absurd."
