Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have requested documents from all cabinet secretaries on how much federal tax money is being spent at businesses owned by President Donald Trump, McClatchy reported on Tuesday.

"The president's financial entanglements make it impossible to know whether he is making his decisions in the public interest or to benefit him or his family members financially," the 18 congressmen wrote, requesting that they receive the documents by Aug. 25. "The president's continued ownership of private businesses also places federal employees in compromised positions when they work on official activities that create financial benefits for the president or his family members."

Trump did not fully separate from his business interests when he became president, ignoring the tradition to divest as previous presidents have done. According to the arrangement Trump set up, he can draw down money from his businesses at any time.

No Republicans, who control the committee, joined in the investigation. Democrats alone can launch their own investigation, but they do not have the power to subpoena documents without the support of the majority party.

The Democrats cited numerous news reports indicating that the federal government has spent money at Trump-owned businesses, including that the State Department paid more than $15,000 on 19 rooms at a Trump-branded hotel in Vancouver while members of the Trump family were there for its grand opening, Talking Points Memo reported.

They also noted that Trump has an ownership stake in Starrett City Associates, a property that receives federal housing subsidies.

In addition, the Democrats expressed concern that the government has not disclosed the funds spent on the president's numerous trips to his own properties and that it is not clear "whether the president benefited financially from these expenditures," Talking Points Memo reported.

"There may be other expenditures of American taxpayer funds at Trump properties that are not yet publicly known," the congressmen said. "Federal agencies and their employees may be hosting events or renting hotel rooms at Trump properties, eating meals at Trump property restaurants, or contracting for equipment rentals with Trump businesses."
