The Trump administration is facing resistance from Democrats over its desire to have citizenship questions reinstated to the 2020 census, The Washington Times reports.

The Justice Department has petitioned the Census Bureau to reinstate the questions that were removed in 2010 in order to buoy Americans' confidence in election results, the Times reports.

"More information is always better from a researcher's point of view," Steven Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, told the Times. "And when you look at things like apportioning and redistricting, which rely on census data, those things are always a concern."

However, Democrats see the move as an end-around by President Donald Trump's administration to identify and then target illegal immigrants. Further, if citizenship questions are reinstated, it will exacerbate inaccuracy of the census because immigrants won't participate.

"Such a question would likely depress participation in the 2020 census from immigrants who fear the government could use the information to target them," Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein wrote in a letter signed by four of her colleagues, the Times reported.

"This chilling effect could lead to broad inaccuracies across the board, from how congressional districts are drawn to how government funds are distributed," Feinstein wrote.

Citizenship questions have been a part of the census for nearly 40 years until it was removed in 2010 and included on an annual and smaller survey, the Times reports.

The census reports that $675 billion of federal spending relies on its numbers, the Times reports.

The Census Bureau has not rendered a decision.
