Rep. Raja Krishnamoorth, a Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, wants the White House to suspend Jared Kushner’s security clearance following a report that said the president's son-in-law and senior adviser sought to establish a secret line of communication with Russia during the president's transition, The Hill reports.
"The issue is not simply that Mr. Kushner wanted a communication backchannel; it's that Mr. Kushner sought to pursue one with a hostile power months after American intelligence agencies had collectively acknowledged the Kremlin’s cyberwarfare against the United States," Krishnamoorth said in a statement.
The Illinois Democrat also called the reports "disturbing" and demanded that Kushner testify before the Oversight Committee.
Kushner has been under tremendous scrutiny following a Washington Post report Friday that said he spoke with a top Russian official in December about establishing a private communications channel. The Democratic National Committee quickly called for the Trump to fire him from his White House post, and some of his colleagues in the West Wing have questioned whether he can survive politically.
But President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders have pushed back on those reports and Kushner, who is being probed by the FBI, is plugging ahead at work.
