Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., is hoping Congress will accept the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia hacked the 2016 presidential election, Politico reported Friday.

Gallego is putting forward an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, an annual measure that must pass, asking Congress to accept agency findings that concluded Russia used hacking and propaganda to damage Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton so the election would favor then-GOP candidate Donald Trump. The vote could take place as early as Wednesday.

"What we're trying to do is reinforce the intelligence community's assessment that there was interference in the 2016 elections," Gallego said Friday.

Gallego maintained the amendment was important because Trump had not been clear regarding whether or not he thought Russia did try to interfere in the election. Earlier this week the president said Russia probably interfered in the election, but added, "Nobody really knows for sure."

On Friday, at the G-20 Summit in Germany, Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin directly for the first time since taking office. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Trump "pressed" Putin on the matter and that the two had a "robust and lengthy exchange" on the subject during their meeting, which lasted over two hours.

Gallego's amendment may not make it to a vote, as the House Rules Committee will meet next week to decide which amendments of hundreds proposed will proceed with the legislation. The rules panel has previously cut those considered contentious, the article explained.
