Susie Tompkins Buell, a major Democratic donor, is reconsidering her support for senators who pushed for the resignation of Al Franken, The New York Times reports.

The newspaper said Buell is a prominent Democratic supporter and noted she has backed female politicians including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Maria Cantwell of Washington and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

But those senators were included in the dozens who urged Franken to step down from the Senate after he was accused of sexual harassment and misconduct, the newspaper said.

Franken announced his resignation in December and Minnesota's Lt. Gov. Tina Smith has replaced him.

Now Buell said she is looking at withdrawing her support from senators who had urged Franken to quit.

"In my gut, they moved too fast," she said. And she claimed Franken "was never given his chance to tell his side of the story."

"For me, this is dangerous and wrong, I am a big believer in helping more women into the political system, but this has given me an opportunity to rethink of how I can best help my party."

And, in an interview with BuzzFeed about those who pushed for Franken to step down, she said: "They need to know that some of their biggest supporters are questioning why they did that. We have to do things conscientiously and fairly. He didn't have the chance to defend himself."

Buell, who lives in San Francisco, founded the clothing brand Esprit. The Times noted that in 2016, she had contributed money to aid a woman, who had accused President Donald Trump of harassment. Buell said the money was not used and later was refunded.
