Republicans on either side of the issue continued to debate the merits of H.R. McMaster over the weekend despite President Donald Trump's nod of approval for his national security adviser, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

In fact, McMaster was on the receiving end of bounteous support from the White House to kick off the weekend.

"He is a good man," Trump said of McMaster.

"Gen. McMaster is a … tremendous asset," Jared Kushner said.

The president has "total confidence" in McMaster, a WH official said.

However, it wasn't enough to stifle debate on the issue at hand — is McMaster the right man for the job to lead the National Security Council?

McMaster has been at the center of White House storms for firing loyalists of chief strategist Stephen Bannon from the NSC to the administration's policy in Afghanistan to not getting along well with the president.

"If the president does not take some action against McMaster, given everything that's come out, then the president owns everything that he is doing," Richard Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government, told the Beacon. "The purge that's going on of Trump supporters out of the NSC — people have finally had enough and are starting to push back."

Not so, says a former Trump transition official.

"Bannon is talented, McMaster is talented, Sebastian Gorka is talented," Heritage Foundation Vice President James Carafano told the Beacon.

"The answer when you don't agree with something is not to get rid of the people. The answer is to force the team to beat out [their differences] and get to the right policy," Carafano told the Beacon. "The last thing that this administration should do is listen to voices that you need to purge this person, and you need to purge that person."
