David Plouffe, who managed the 2008 presidential campaign of then-Sen. Barack Obama, Saturday endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.
"Now, to be honest, during the most intense days of the 2008 primary, I would never have imagined writing this piece,"
Plouffe, who now works in the private sector, said in a post of Medium. "And I doubt Team Clinton felt any differently about me.
"We’ve come a long way," he added. "Still, eight years after that historic night in Des Moines, there’s so much left to do."
Plouffe was referring to Saturday's annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner, a major Democratic event in Iowa, which holds its caucuses in February in the first test of the 2016 presidential season.
"And Americans still need a president who will wake up every day, prepared to overcome any obstacle on their behalf," he added. "Hillary Clinton should — and I believe will — be that president."
Plouffe's endorsement is expected to encourage Obama supporters to back Clinton, MSNBC reports. The president remains popular among Democrats.
On Twitter, Clinton thanked Plouffe for his backing:
