Retired Army Gen. David Petraeus met with President-elect Donald Trump for an hour Monday, adding intrigue to an already clouded secretary of state race.

"I was with him for about an hour," Petraeus said, according to The Washington Post. "He basically walked us around the world. Showed a great grasp of a variety of the challenges that are out there and some of the opportunities as well. Very good conversation and we'll see where it goes from here."

Petraeus, who left his post with the CIA in 2012 amid revelations he shared classified information with his biographer — a woman he was having an extramarital affair with — is in the running for the position alongside 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee is also a potential choice, according to the Post.

Romney, who has drawn the ire of Trump's top aide, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and former Gov. Mike Huckabee, is set to meet with Trump on Tuesday for a second time.
