Top Democrat Rebukes Partisan Sowing WH Discord of Trump

In rare support from a Democrat, President Donald Trump received the benefit of the doubt Sunday from former N.Y. Governor and N.Y. Democratic Party Chairman David Paterson, who ripped the "cabal in the White House that's working against the president."

"I think we've gotten to a point where we just are completely unable to support the president, no matter who the president is," Paterson told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y. Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama all got a lot of opposition. ". . . President Trump has gotten more [opposition] than anyone else. Some of it he feeds himself, but some of it is people just don't like him. . . .

"We are not going to survive, in my opinion, as a country with this kind of acrimony back and forth being played out on cable television every night. People can't even have Thanksgiving dinner without a big fight. This is not very good for the character and the dialogue of our country."

After a week that saw a scathing "resistance" op-ed in The New York Times attack President Trump's White House, Paterson added there are "rules to abide by" when you are serving in an administration.

"What bothers me is that if what was written is true, then there is a cabal in the White House that's working against the president," Paterson added to host John Catsimatidis, who called him a "common sense Democrat." "Now, if you don't like the president, you may think that's good – [But] you need to think it over.

"President Trump got elected, and these other people did not."

Paterson pointed to his own experience with administrative betrayal, concluding "in the end you've got to listen to the person who's in charge or you are no good."

"There is a phrase that we used to use [when I was governor] for staff that acted this way, and it's called 'We know better,'" Paterson said. "'Yeah, Gov. Paterson, he knows some things, but we know better.' 'Yeah, President Trump has done some good things, but then he acts out, and we know better.' And it's dangerous.

"Democrats need to listen to this: just because it's Trump doesn't mean that we should support this kind of action on the part of appointed governmental officials at the highest levels who are replacing the president's prerogatives to make decisions with their own opinions, and they haven't been elected to anything."

Paterson also rebuked the media's complicity in sowing discord against the White House and the U.S. president.

"All these people in the media who are always talking about who is and who is not telling the truth, they will print the words of a liar in a heartbeat," Paterson said. "I think that's where the president actually does make a good point about them, even though he does the same."
