Donald Trump's propensity to contradict himself on a regular basis is reason enough for conservatives to find a third presidential alternative, says National Review writer David French, though French has firmly decided that person will not be himself.

"Why would anyone believe a word that comes out of that man's mouth?" French said Monday on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper." "I mean, honestly, is there a single, credible, rational argument that he tells the truth? He contradicts himself by the minute."

French pointed to the list of possible Supreme Court nominees Trump recently released in an effort to soothe fears of critics on the right. While the list did look good, French admitted, Trump followed it up with a tweet saying there might be more names to add.

French, an Iraq War veteran, also noted that Trump has called on the military to take actions that would constitute war crimes.

"We have no idea," French said. "Whatever his policy is, he makes it up on the fly and contradicts his own website … No one can believe a word that he says. Why would you think that he would appoint good judges or have a rational foreign policy?"

French was courted by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol to make a third-party effort, but French wrote in an op-ed on National Review Online Sunday that he had decided against it after a time of study and prayer.

"I think it should be clear to everyone that there is a path to defeat Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton," French told CNN. With 65 percent of Americans saying they are willing to consider a third option, someone should be able to launch an effort, he said, but he said that his own status as an unknown to most of the public would only hurt the chances of someone else with a real chance.

He suggested that several Republican governors would be up to the challenge.
