The indictments handed down by special counsel Robert Mueller on Friday against 13 Russians and corporations for meddling in the 2016 U.S. election prove that there was no collusion, former Donald Trump deputy campaign manager David Bossie said Monday.
"This indictment shows, proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt that this president and our campaign had nothing to do with it," Bossie told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.
"There was no collusion, cooperation, coordination with the Russians."
He added that "the hoax that this president has talked about has been proven. There was no involvement with us with the Russians at all during this campaign. As a matter of fact, you know this indictment shows that there was more done after the election than before the election."
Bossie stressed that Trump won, because "we ran a better campaign. He had better issues and [Hillary Clinton] was a terrible candidate."
He blamed whatever influence the Russians were able to have on the 2016 election on former President Barack Obama.
"We now know through this indictment that this started in May of 2014, two and a half years before the election," Bossie said.
"Before Donald Trump was a candidate, before many people were candidates, but here's the point…. Why did [officials in the Obama administration] fail? If they saw this, if they knew that the Russians were trying to impede in our 2016 elections, why did they fail? The dereliction of duty goes across the board for the Obama administration."
Bossie said that what the indictments do show is that the Russians want to disrupt American elections, and so what Trump has to do is "give direction to… our law enforcement and our intelligence agencies and say, this must never happen again. I think that's what he and his responsibility and his role should do today, but this is all on Barack Obama for the 2016 election."
