Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., is calling for the House Judiciary Committee to hold hearings on white supremacy groups and other hate organizations.

Issa made his comments in a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. A copy of the letter was posted on Issa's Twitter feed on Thursday.

His call for hearings was prompted by the violent rally of white supremacy groups in Charlottesville, Virginia, Issa said.

"While Congress cannot legislate respect, decency, or acceptance of others, we have an obligation to use our platform to lead our country forward on these matters," he said.

The Washington Examiner noted Issa is considered one of the more vulnerable Republicans in the House facing re-election next year.
