Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., claims to have "earth-shattering" information proving that Russia did not interfere with the 2016 election, but he has yet to share it with the president.

Last August, Rohrabacher met with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in Ecuador’s British Embassy. He later said that Assange showed him evidence that Russia was not the website’s source the leaked Democratic Party emails that WikiLeaks released during the campaign.

Rohrabacher, the head of the House subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia, is well-known for his support of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He’s been called "Putin’s favorite congressman," and his close ties to Moscow present a problem for meeting Trump.

Rohrabacher told The Intercept on Wednesday that he tried to meet with President Donald Trump and arrange a meeting with Assange, but White House chief of staff John Kelly denied his request. Kelly told the congressman that a meeting could put Trump in legal jeopardy in regards to the ongoing investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia.

"What is preventing me from talking to Trump about this is the existence of a special prosecutor," Rohrabacher said. "Not only Kelly, but others are worried if I say one word to Trump about Russia, that it would appear to out-of-control prosecutors that that is where the collusion is."

"I don’t like it, but that’s the reality of it, that we can’t make the president vulnerable to this kind of prosecutorial power," he added. Kelly is "afraid that would open up the door, and I think there’s some validity to that."
