Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they believe that some cities across the country are currently “under siege” by protesters and counter-protesters, according to a new poll.

A USA Today/Ipsos poll released Tuesday indicates that even though a majority of Americans believe that some cities are being taking over by protests, the topic has a partisan divide.

Poll results show:

  • 64% of Americans say cities are under siege by protesters.
  • 83% of Republicans say cities are under siege.
  • 48% of Democrats say they believe cities are under siege.
  • 71% of Americans living in rural areas say they believe cities are under siege.
  • 59% of Americans residing in urban areas say cities are under siege.

According to the poll, there is a partisan split on how to respond to the ongoing protests. A majority of Republicans, 82%, say the government should send out more police to get protests under control, compared to 35% of Democrats who feel more police should be deployed.

President Donald Trump has taken a “law and order” approach to quell the protests. He has sent federal agents to help put an end to violent demonstrations in some cities. Democrats have been opposed to Trump’s approach to ending the violent protests. Former Vice President Joe Biden has shown support for protesters calling for racial justice but has called for the violence to end.

Poll results also show Republicans are more likely to arm themselves to protect private property during protests than Democrats. Seventy-seven percent of Republicans said they would arm themselves, while only 33% of Democrats said they would take up arms.

The poll surveyed 1,108 adults between Sept. 17-18. It surveyed 1,108 adults. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
