Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Col., said getting a pledge by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un to denuclearize is an "historic achievement" for President Donald Trump.

His comments came Wednesday in an interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends," where he discussed the recent Singapore summit between Trump and Kim.

"This denuclearization was the goal of the summit," he said. "Getting President Trump and Kim Jong Un to agree on denuclearization had to be the goal. This is the first time we have seen Kim tell a United States president in person that he supported denuclearization."

He called the pledge "an historic achievement," but remained cautious.

"Here is what we know: At the end of the Obama administration, as a result of strategic patience, we were at the brink of war because North Korea had a fully developed program with dozens upon dozens of nuclear warheads at their disposal with a ballistic missile capability that might reach the homeland of the United States," he said.

"What we know now is we have backed away from that precipice of war."

But Gardner said the U.S. should be cautious of "the ability of Kim to actually keep his word."

And in a tweet about the summit, Gardner maintained North Korea's denuclearization should be "verifiable and irreversible."
