Republican Sen. Cory Gardner on Friday pushed his bill that would outfit every police officer in the country with upgraded body armor to protect against rifle fire, saying, "we can find a billion dollars to back the blue."

A guest on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" morning show, the Colorado lawmaker said it's imperative to protect those who are protecting us, regardless of cost.

"This is going to be expensive; there's no doubt about it. But the fact is this country sent $1.7 billion to Iran, I think we can find a billion dollars to back the blue," Gardner said on "Fox and Friends."

Gardner introduced the bill earlier this week, in honor of National Police Week, to get Level 3 body armor on every cop in the country.

"Most have vests but not the right kind," Gardner said. "This would equip our officers with type 3 body armor that's good for rifles."

Most officers wear Level 2 armor that can protect against handguns. Gardner wants to upgrade cops to the ceramic plate protection offered in Level 3.

Gardner highlighted the plight of smaller police forces in rural areas who usually take hand-me-downs from bigger forces when they upgrade theirs.

"I don't think we should have hand-me-downs protecting our police," Gardner said.

"The president has done an incredible job supporting police officers. Nobody has supported them more than this president," Gardner said. "Congress, I hope, can get behind this bill. We gotta make sure we push this as hard as we can.

Police officers are "protecting our communities. They're America's sheepdog protecting us from the wolves out there, and that's what we have to do," Gardner said.

In Colorado: 10 officers have been shot - three killed - in the past six months.
