Sen. Chris Coons told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Wednesday that he is fully behind the $2 trillion coronavirus relief deal agreed to by the Senate and White House overnight.

Democrats in the Senate had voted against the legislation in two votes earlier in the week, saying the deal did not provide enough aid to workers and that the money put aside to help large corporations was without proper oversight.

“I think it was worth the day wait,” the Delaware Democrat said, explaining that “the things that Democrats stood firm for - expanding unemployment, helping states and counties, investing in hospitals, transparency on the big fund” - are all now part of the package.

Coons said these additions made him “really excited about this package and excited to get it out the door.”

Aid for local governments was one of the main reasons a deal was not agreed upon earlier, the senator said, explaining that “There was very little for states and counties a few days ago. There’s now a $150 billion in direct assistance.”

Coons, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, said “Most of the folks we are admiring and lauding, the paramedics and hospital nurses, many of them in this country work for county hospitals,” but that the coffers of state governments are being severely harmed by a sharp fall in sales tax revenue as the economy comes to almost a complete stop.

The senator also emphasized that he is "hopeful the House, rather than reconvening, rather than trying to revise or amend it, will simply pass it by unanimous consent so this record relief package can get out to the American people.”
