Rapid testing for coronavirus in disadvantaged communities will be the key to getting Florida's economy reopened, Florida's Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez told Newsmax TV.
"The governor has been very focused on testing because ... it really provides you with the data that you're going to need to make good decisions as you start to reopen Florida's economy," Nunez told Monday's "Spicer & Co." "So we've been focused on not just overall testing, but making sure all of our communities, our diverse communities in Florida have access to testing, but also the rapid testing. I think that is going to be an essential part of our strategy as we begin to open up certain sectors of the economy that we know will be more at risk than others."
Rapid testing gives results for coronavirus faster than previous tests, usually within between five to 45 minutes. Those tests, Nunez said, could be put to use in helping the state's large elderly population.
"Governor DeSantis is one of the first governors in the country to really put forth mitigation efforts to protect our elderly," Nunez told Monday's "Spicer & Co."That included limiting visitation to nursing homes as well as making sure that we have all the resources."
As of Monday night, Florida has 32,138 coronavirus cases, including 1,088 deaths. The state's black and Latino areas continue to be the hardest hit by the outbreak.
"We have been very proactive working with communities that have disadvantaged populations, the governor opened up walk-up clinics for areas where people may have transportation concerns ... we're looking at expanding those walk-up clinics for minority communities and other areas of the state," Nunez said.
Nunez added: "So we think that's an important strategy again, to be able to ensure people get access to testing because that has been one of our priorities, ensuring that we are at the top three in overall testing ... making sure that the testing is focused on areas that perhaps may not have the type of access to transportation."
