The Dallas Morning News editorial board blasted Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, for his endorsement of Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, calling the decision a "new low."

"Sen. John Cornyn's endorsement this week of Roy Moore for the U.S. Senate from Alabama is a new low not just for the former jurist and ex-Texas attorney general, but for the party he claims to love," the paper wrote.

"We had hoped, as many have, that Cornyn would stand against the tide of populist, nativist, and exclusionary politics that have come to dominate the Republican Party in Texas and elsewhere," the editorial board said

"That hope has now been all but extinguished," the paper added.

Cornyn had been a mainstay of the establishment wing of the Republican Party, according to the editorial board and the senator "has prided himself on bipartisan efforts to pass ambitious legislation and, albeit quietly, has stood up for trade, immigration and other traditional GOP priorities."

The Texas senator is under pressure from Steve Bannon, while Sean Hannity said Cornyn was in opposition to Donald Trump although his voting record is "almost perfectly aligned" with the president, the paper said.

"If taking the right course wasn't hard, it wouldn't require courage. Besides, Cornyn's embrace of Moore doesn't just put party over principle. It puts power over party. What will remain of a Republican Party whose leaders are so desperate to preserve its power that they cozy up to a Senate candidate like Moore?"

NBC News producer Frank Thorp V tweeted comments from Cornyn:

Moore has made controversial statements during his political career, which included being removed from Alabama's chief justice job twice.

"I was informed" that some communities in the U.S. were under Sharia law, he said, according to Politico.

The Alabama Senate candidate also has questioned whether former President Barack Obama was born in the United States, Politico reported.
