Lewandowski Snaps on CNN When Pressed About Poll Numbers

Former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski got into a shouting match during a heated panel discussion on CNN with Peter Beinart, a contributing editor to The Atlantic and columnist for Haaretz.

The argument, which occurred during a segment hosted by Don Lemon, was sparked when Lewandowski claimed that Trump's "doing much better amongst the African-American community than Mitt Romney did or John McCain did," saying "Trump in Colorado is getting 27 percent of the African-American vote. In Pennsylvania, he's getting 19 percent. In Wisconsin, he's getting 22 percent of the African-American vote."

This prompted Beinart to ask for the source of the evidence. When Lewandowski said a Remington Research Group poll, Beinart asked incredulously, "The Remington Research poll? You're choosing one poll. Look at the aggregate."

Lewandowski snarled back, "That's my research, unless you have something to prove me otherwise. Do you? Do you have any numbers? Do you have any numbers? You don't."

Beinart argued that "it seems more logical to look at the aggregate of polls" before Lewandowski interjected.

"Don't interrupt me. I'm just saying. Let's look at this methodologically. You chose one poll and three states in that poll. Wouldn't it make more sense to look at the aggregate of polls?" Beinart said.

The editor added that many news reports have suggested that Trump is underperforming, but Lewandowski interrupted him, asking for one example. Beinart named The New York Times and The Washington Post, to which Lewandowski asked "Who? Who from The New York Times wrote it?"

That incensed Beinart even more, who shouted, "Don't give me this nonsense, OK? Corey, listen: I'm not getting paid by one of the candidates, OK?"

"Neither am I," Lewandowski said. "You know what? And I think you couldn't get paid by one of the candidates, because you have no talent to get paid by one of the candidates."

The Washington Post reported that Beinart's reaction typifies the frustration many journalists feel as Lewandowski continues to act like a Trump aide rather than a political analyst with off-topic and off-base claims.

In this instance, the question from Lemon that started the exchange was about whether there is a "hidden" Trump vote, not about minority support.

But, as the Post noted, Lewandowski not only hijacked the conversation, veered it off topic and gave wildly distorted numbers, but also tried to show up one of his CNN colleagues by acting as if Beinart was the one who arrived unprepared to debate by not having these specific polling numbers.
