Chris Coons to Pelosi: May Be 'Long Wait' for Fair Trial Guarantee

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may have a "long wait" if she holds back articles of impeachment until she feels that President Donald Trump's Senate trial will be handled fairly, Sen. Chris Coons said Thursday.

"I don't know exactly what speaker Pelosi has in mind," the Delaware Democrat said on CNN's "New Day." "I am concerned that if she waits until we have a guarantee of a fair trial in the Senate, it may be a long wait."

However, at this point, as Republicans control the Senate, it will only take four members to go to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and insist to him that he negotiate a set of rules concerning evidence, witnesses, and proceedings "that will be fair and ensure a real and open trial," Coons said.

If that doesn't happen, Coons added, "we may see a very brief, quick show trial."

However, it is possible that a consensus will be reached, said Coons.

"I'll remind you that during the impeachment trial of President [Bill] Clinton, ultimately Republicans and Democrats in the Senate came together and adopted by a vote of 100-0 the rules that presided over the end of that trial," said Coons.

Coons also said it was reasonable for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to request testimony from four fact witnesses, including former national security adviser John Bolton and acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.

"If that isn't accommodated by McConnell, he's rejected that request out of hand," said Coons. "Then we're likely either in for a long impasse or for an effort by Republicans to bring in witnesses who aren't relevant to this trial [and] who don't have a direct testimony."
