Coons: Negotiating With Trump Like 'Trying to Nail Jell-O'

Negotiating with President Donald Trump on another coronavirus package has been "like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall," Sen. Chris Coons said Wednesday.

"He's canceling all negotiations and then within a few short hours saying 'no, no, we urgently need more money to be enacted tomorrow," the Delaware Democrat said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

But instead of being in session and negotiating a final COVID relief package, the Senate majority and the Judiciary Committee are racing ahead to confirm Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, said Coons.

Trump and his team were working on Wednesday to press for $1,200 stimulus checks, aid for airlines, and other aid lines after he tweeted on Tuesday that the relief talks were done until after the election.

"We've been working for months in Congress to put together a package that we can get passed," said Coons. "Six months ago, we unanimously passed in the Senate the CARES Act which delivered about $2.3 trillion worth of relief and is what's keeping our economy from collapsing."

But four months ago the House passed another relief package that the Senate Majority Leader never took up, and it's been difficult for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to come to an agreement with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, said Coons.

Meanwhile, there is still an "unresolved and critical issue" of funding state and local employees, which have laid off more than 1.5 million public employees, said Coons.

"The middle of a pandemic is no time to have teachers and paramedics, nurses, and police officers facing layoffs because of the ongoing recession caused by President Trump's bungled mishandling of the pandemic," said Coons.

He added that the Senate should not be rushing to confirm Barrett just 27 days before the presidential election.

"I've been reading her opinions and law review articles and I'm increasingly convinced that she's even more conservative than Justice (Antonin) Scalia for whom she clerked on the Supreme Court and she has demonstrated a willingness to reverse long-settled precedent," said Coons. "I look forward to questioning her more about that."
