The news broke about the verdict in the Kate Steinle shooting case Thursday while there was a staff Christmas party being hosted by President Donald Trump and wife Melania, and he was "shocked, saddened, really outraged" at the news that a jury had found the Mexican immigrant charged in the death not guilty, counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway said Friday.

"This is a president who as campaigner, now as president, remains committed not to just memories of Kate and all other victims, but those angel moms and angle dads who courageously went on the campaign trail with Donald Trump [and] have been here to the White House since then to meet with President Trump on actual legislation," Conway told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, who already had been deported five times and was wanted for a sixth deportation, had been charged with murder after Steinle was fatally shot in the back while walking with her father on a San Francisco pier.

Zarate did not deny shooting her, but said it was an accident. While he was acquitted of murder, he was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case gained national attention, as it came during the presidential campaign, touching off a debate over immigration and sanctuary cities.

The nation's "angel" parents, whose children were killed by illegal immigrants, want action, said Conway, and it makes "common sense" to Americans to want a wall built.

"If someone flouted the law, broke the law, here illegally, comes back five times, that is why folks want the wall built," said Conway. "That's why they want more agents at the border, why they want to make sure our brave men and women at the border have equipment they need to keep criminal aliens out and poison of drugs out of our society.

"The No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, tells major sanctuary cities you're not getting federal funding."

She also criticized Zarate's public defender for making political comments after the verdict, when he mentioned the ongoing special investigation concerning Russia and the 2016 campaign.

"This investigation has nothing to do with a criminal alien who had been deported five times, who was convicted seven times, and for him to equate the two is really ridiculous," said Conway.

"I'm sure he is looking for some book gig. I'm sure he will be a guest on TV shows all weekend. It is actually, I don't feel like dignifying with a response since the two have nothing to do with the other."

She then criticized House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, pointing out she represents San Francisco, where the shooting occurred, and that she'd had a tough week.

"I don't know if she is expressing anything to the Steinle family," said Conway. "She doesn't know where she is on sexual harassment, particularly if the perpetrators, or alleged perpetrators are in her party."
