White House counselor Kellyanne Conway wouldn't confirm or deny news reports that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is stepping down in January, but instead accused the media of reporting on personnel and "palace intrigue" because it's easier than learning about tax relief or other issues.

"You always hear these personnel stories and palace intrigue stories," Conway told Fox News' "Fox & Friends," while the show's co-hosts tried to get her to comment on whether Tillerson would be staying in office.

"[It is] a heck of a lot easier for lots of people than learning finer points of massive tax relief, of learning finer points of what repealing, replacing Obamacare would do," Conway also said.

On Thursday, multiple media outlets reported that the White House has developed a plan to replace Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo. The report was first published by The New York Times, and later bolstered by reports from The Associated Press and The Washington Post.

Conway's comments came after the White House deflected questions on whether President Donald Trump still has confidence in Tillerson. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders insisted that Tillerson is still on the job, and would not comment on the whether the former Exxon Mobil CEO would be leaving.

On Friday, Conway pointed out that Tillerson was coming to the White House for lunch, as she's seen that on Trump's schedule.

"As the president said yesterday, Rex is here," Conway said. "He is at his job."

But when show co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked her "yes or no?" Conway replied "Yes or no what?"

"Is he resigning in January?" Earhardt said. "Will he be here in a month?"

"You have to ask the person if they are resigning," said Conway. "I'm telling you what the president said yesterday. The president said yesterday he's here. Rex Tillerson, the secretary of state is coming for lunch.

"Scheduled to have lunch with the president today. Already on the books. Everybody serves at pleasure of the president. Everybody serving yesterday is serving today.

"Would you say the story is inaccurate," another of the co-hosts, Brian Kilmeade, asked her.

"Which story?" Conway said, and Kilmeade told her he was speaking of the Post's article.

"I would repeat yesterday what the press secretary said on behalf of the president," said Conway.

"The secretary of state is showing up for work today like yesterday. In fact, today he has lunch with the president . . . you're asking me to project. Are any of you going to be there next month? I sure hope so. You have highest ratest show in the morning."
